Community Bingo Night

I love to play Bingo!  The thrill of being the first one to get all the numbers and shout out those magical words is a lot of fun.  Of course I’m a very competitive person, so I may get more thrill out of this than the average person, lol.

The town down the road from where I live holds a community bingo night once a week.  I think this is a great way for the community to get together and do something fun rather than just always doing fund raising and doing community support projects; plus it is a great way to just get out of the house!

I would love to start a community bingo night in our town, but I have so much going on that I don’t dare add anything more to my plate, lol.  I think for now I will have to try and make the 10 minute drive and check out bingo night in another town, unless I can convince someone else to get this up and running!

There are also plenty of online bingo sites if you can’t make the trip to a bingo night in your area, or just don’t have one around you.  Foxy Bingo and X bingo are two examples.  You can always find sites where you play for real, with money at stake, or you can just play for fun and just for the thrill of winning (or losing, lol).  You can even learn a little about bingo and what it takes to win here: Skill Not Required!

What does your community do to come together and just have some fun?  Do you have any type of weekly event, or possibly even just something once a year?  I would love to hear what brings everyone together!

Costumes are not just for Halloween!

My best friend had a birthday party for her six year old son recently and she made it into a costume party!  I have to admit, it was kinda cute watching all these kids parade around in their costumes when it was not Halloween; and my son LOVED getting to dress up as Buzz Lightyear again!

So this got me to thinking.  Why do costumes have to be for only one day of the  year?  If my baby boy wants to run around as Buzz Lightyear just because he is in the mood to be an action figure or super hero, why not?  Plus it makes me feel better about spending money on a kid’s Halloween costume if I know it is going to be used more than once.

The next time you are throwing a party, consider making it a costume party.  This is a great way to stretch your dollar further when you are thinking about buying costumes because you know you will have another use for it down the road.  Plus it’s especially great for a kid’s birthday party.  I’m sure the kids will love getting dressed up, and you can even make a theme out of it.  You could do fun superhero desserts, or an animal themed party with “dirt dessert” (I will have to make this some time and post some pictures for you, it is truly awesome for kids parties!).  If you have some recipes or game ideas for a costume party of your own please share them with us in the comments.  In the meantime enjoy the superhero recipe listed below!

Here is a fun ‘Avengers’ superhero recipe courtesy of Disney that would work at any awesome costume party!

1.    Whip up a batch of your favorite sugar cookie recipe and use a cookie cutter to make character cookies.  They make Superhero cookie cutters in the shape of many Avengers heroes.  You can also use any oval shaped cookie cutter and instead fill in the details with your decorating.  Once your cookies are baked and cooled, you are ready to begin decorating.

2.    You can make your own royal icing (See:  How to Make Your Own Royal Icing included below) or use store-bought.  Color with food coloring to achieve the various colors you want for decorating.  We recommend green (for the Hulk), yellow, blue, black, white, and brown.  Place each color in a piping bag.

3.    Begin by outlining the cookie in your base color.  (If you were starting with The Hulk, outline the entire shape in green.  Color in your outline with green icing and cover the entire cookie.  (You can actually use a paintbrush to “paint” your cookie.)  Give the base a few minutes to dry and choose your next color.  For The Hulk’s hair, outline his hairline in black and proceed to fill in with black icing.  You can continue to draw features in and watch your character come to life.

How to Make Your Own Royal Icing

  • 3 egg whites, at room temperature.  We prefer dehydrated egg whites, available at most supermarkets.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • food coloring (optional)

Mix above ingredients with a little warm water until smooth.  Add food coloring.

Children’s Oxylent Review & Giveaway (US 18+)

My kids love having something fun to drink, and I’m sure your kids do too.  Usually my kids get milk, water, or juice (and way too much of it really).  If they are with grandma, she will give them soda even though I ask her not to (which really irritates me I must add).  I also try to give my kids a vitamin, but I usually forget (vitamins for myself or for the kids are not something I am good at remembering).  So when I was presented with the idea of trying out Oxylent for the kids I was really excited.

“Children’s Oxylent is an effervescent daily multivitamin/mineral drink that nurtures, strengthens, and protects growing minds and bodies, specially formulated for ages 4 years and over” (Vitalah News Release, March 2012).

Review:

As soon as we got the box in the mail and I told the kids it was something for them, they were both really excited to try it out.  Unfortunately it was a really busy day and we were running late, so we had to put our taste test on hold for another day.  The next day my daughter did not forget she had this cool new drink to try out.  She begged me for a glass of it, and of course I obliged since we needed to try it out anyway.  I mixed it up and gave it to her and she drank the whole thing down in no time!  She even told me that she really liked it (since my husband had been saying to her how she wouldn’t like it, it was too fizzy for her – he loves to tease her!).  She just had to prove him wrong, lol.  Well being the curious cat that I am, I had to try it as well.  I made myself a glass and surprisingly I really enjoyed the taste as well.  Both of my kids seem to like the taste, and I like that it is a vitamin drink in disguise!  I cannot say whether or not it has any health benefits for them, but according to the packaging it is loaded with beneficial nutrients and vitamins.
