Getting Fit, achieving my goals! Review and Giveaway! ~~ended~~

Most women I know have tried to lose weight at some point in their life, whether it is with dieting, exercising more, or both.  I am no exception.  The problem is that I really enjoy food.  I don’t binge and overeat, I just enjoy the taste of certain foods, and find some things really hard to give up.  The other problem is that although I always starting out exercising with the best of intentions, I always find some reason to start doing less and less until I’m right back where I started from.

Last year I started walking and running at the indoor track where I work (yes, I am lucky enough to have access to this facility).  Things went well for a few months, which is actually longer than my exercise spurts normally last.  You see I wanted to run a 5k mud run in the spring, and I knew if I didn’t start working at it, there was no way I was going to make it.  So I would go between 3-5 times a week, depending on how busy I was, and walk during my lunch.  Eventually I got up to where I was running more and more, and finally able to run most of the 3.12 miles I needed for the 5k.  I did the mud run, and then I basically stopped exercising.  I ran another 5k in July, but I didn’t really prepare ahead of time, and it showed.  I was going to do another in November, but by this time I was so out of shape, I had to walk almost the whole thing.  I started doing Zumba in December, which I really enjoyed, but it was only a 4 week program and when it ended, I was back to doing nothing again.

So here I am, eating what I want (not sure that is ever going to change), and not exercising.  I really am not happy with the lack of energy I have, the moodiness I have toward my kids and family, and just my overall health.  I am not overweight by any means, but I am far from my ideal weight which was 2 kids and 25 pounds ago.  But more importantly, I just don’t have the energy to do the things I want anymore.  That’s when I heard from Dustin Maher, author of Fit Moms for Life: How to Have Endless Energy to Outplay your Kidshttp://fitmomsforlife.com, www.dustinmaherfitness.com

Dustin gave me a free copy of his book, encouraged me to read it, and to try out some of the techniques listed in his book.  At first I was thinking, “oh this is just another exercise and diet book,” but I was actually pleasantly surprised at the content I found in the book.  It was very inspirational, and the techniques Dustin lists are really doable.

Dustin lists 5 pillars of health that you need to have in order to achieve your goals:  Mindset, nutrition, strength training, burst training, and environment.  The ultimate goal using these pillars, which Dustin walks you through step by step, is achieving fitness for life.

Fit Moms for Life is perfect for Mothers (and women in general) who want a fitness program that works. Dustin Maher says:

  • Traditional Cardio Doesn’t Lose Fat
  • You Can’t Work Out to Compensate for Poor Eating
  • See Results 9 Times Faster With Burst Training
  • Learn ONE Exercise That Shrinks a Waistline WITHOUT diet changes
  • Burn Fat While You Sleep
  • A Healthy Environment Equals A More Fit Family

When I was reading through the book, I could really identify with a lot of what Dustin was saying, and the first pillar he lists, mindset, is so important.  If you do have the will to change your life, your situation, or your body, then you are not going to.  “You have to really want to make a change!”  Dustin does a great job of walking you through how to make attainable goals so you can achieve success.

In addition, Dustin gives so many tips on how to eat right, you can even still have certain fatty foods, you just have to eat them right and with the right complimentary foods.  There are exercise instructions and even some with pictures to help you get it right!

The best part, is that the book showcases multiple success stories of women just like you and I.  At the end of each chapter, there are a several women who talk about their journey of getting fit, and staying in shape using Dustin’s program.

So I am going to go for it!  I have the mindset, I am slowly working on the nutrition piece of it, and have begun doing some cardio and strength training.  I have a plan and been sticking to it for 3 weeks now.  Will you join me!?

My inspiration is my husband. He does indoor rock climbing 3/week and is bummed that he doesn’t have much time to run. I’m amazed that he has the energy to rock climb at all. And that he wishes he could do more!

My reason for getting fit is my children and my health.

I am a cancer survivor and the meds I had to take to save my life put some weight on. Of course, it’s a side effect I’d rather have than death but have not been able to take it off successfully.

You see, I need to be healthy to live long. I have autism and two special needs children, both of whom have autism and other disabilities. Their father is deceased and so they only have me now. That’s reason enough for me to keep trying until I can do it!!
