August is American Adventures Month – Go Ahead And Explore!

For many of us, August marks the last chance to get away before the end of the summer and before the hustle and bustle of school sets in. Whether you’re looking for a fun new place to explore, a quiet space to enjoy nature, or learning something new, American Adventures Month is the perfect time to go for it!

Adventure and excitement brings about creativity, endurance, play and cohesiveness within you and your family and August is the perfect month to get in that last family outing before winter routines take over. Get out, enjoy the world, and celebrate what America has to offer.

American Adventures Month Activities

Explore the waters

Whether you live near an ocean, river, or lake, there is always some sort of water sport available to try. Some ideas include, kayaking, surfing, boating, fishing, canoeing, paddle boarding, water skiing, tubing, jet skiing, etc.

You can also take amazing outdoor photos with a smartphone camera like that on your Samsung Galaxy S8, and then share right to your favorite social media sites with U.S. Cellular’s network that works in the middle of anywhere.

Being outside is perfect for selfies, but the most flattering light for a gorgeous selfie is natural, indirect light (see more selfie tips here). But make sure that you pay attention and are aware of your surroundings.

Wander through national parks/forests

There are over 400 national parks and forests in the US alone and you can find one near you by visiting Chances are, you have one near you. Why not spend a day hiking, camping, and exploring nature within one of the many beautiful parks or forests located near you!

American Adventures Month in August is a great time to get outdoors, and spending time at one of the many national parks is an excellent way to celebrate. Luckily, the National Park Service is waiving entrance fees on August 25 to celebrate their birthday. If you head to their site, you can find the parks activities and amenities so you can pick one that is right for you.

Visiting a national park offers loads of activities. You can hike the parks’ trails, learn about the parks’ history, and explore the majestic beauty of these national treasures.

Road trip

Drive around, spend quality time with friends or family and explore areas you haven’t seen before. GPS Essentials can help users navigate routes on the road and on trails so you don’t get lost, and you may even find a hidden gem along the way!

Another app to try is the Compass app – teach your kids about navigation and exploration using a compass. Whether you use it in the car, or make some pit stops and simply explore, this can be a fun family activity.

Be Safe While Exploring

Getting out and enjoying nature has so many benefits, but be sure you are safe when you are venturing into new territory. Download the First Aid app from the American Red Cross, which provides basic first aid tips and advice for injuries, burns, sprains/broken bones and other medical emergencies.

Bring along an “offline survival manual” that contains information on how to make fire, build a shelter, find food, treat insect or animal bites, and other useful content in a case of emergency.

Stay aware of your surroundings. When you are capturing that cool photo, remain aware of your surroundings. Stay on the trail, avoid steep cliffs or ledges, and always keep an eye out for dangerous animals.

As a best practice, use your smartphone to check in with a loved one regularly so they know your whereabouts, the route you’re taking, and the time you’ll be back home. This is made easy with U.S. Cellular, you can rely on their high-quality network to work in the middle of anywhere.

We always travel in the spring or fall. Love the fall colors and the cooler weather. Traveling safely is a must and we always have the car checked over and plan the route and let someone know our schedule. Reply

Traveling is always so much fun. I wish we could do it more, but it's tough for my husband to get time off. We did recently return from a trip to Gettysburg and Williamsburg, so that was fun! Reply

I haven't been on any big trips lately because we have a new puppy. I did go to Cincinnati to go to the zoo and King's Island in July. Reply

I am heading to Belize this month and then I'll hopefully *fingers crossed* return home to a change of season at one of our nearby state parks where will hit the road to see the changing colors of the Fall leaves. Reply

Late August/Early is one of my favorite times of the year. It's perfect hiking and camping weather, where it's not too warm during the day and cooler at night. Reply

I've never heard of American Adventures Month before. It can get rather hot and humid in August and when it does we stay in the air conditioning so we can breathe. Reply
