Have you ever wondered what type of oil you should be putting in your vehicle? If you are confused about all of the differences in motor oil on the market these days, you are not alone.

When trying to figure out which oil is best for you, it is good to know that there are four basic types of motor oil. Knowing the difference between them can help you make an informed decision.

Four Basic Types of Motor Oil

Synthetic Oil

Synthetic motor oil is a chemically engineered process in which the oils have fewer impurities and better properties than other oils like conventional.

This type of oil is beneficial for better performance in extremely high and low temperatures and is great for high-tech engines.

Synthetics are an exceptional oil but are about three times as expensive as conventional oil and not always necessary for most engines. Use your owner’s manual as a guide. If it doesn’t call for synthetic oil, using it will only be an additional expense that may not to anything to increase performance or prolong life.

Synthetic Blend

A mixture of synthetic and conventional oils that adds an oxidized resistance and provides great performance in low-temperatures.

Synthetic blends are popular with pick-up and SUV drivers because they do offer better protection but usually cost only a bit more than premium conventional oils.

High-Mileage

A chemically engineered process in which the oils have fewer impurities and better properties than other oils like conventional. Seal conditioners are also added to the oil to expand and increase the flexibility of internal engine seals.

High-mileage oil is beneficial for better performance in extremely high and low temperatures.

Conventional

Conventional motor oil contains a mixture of viscosity grades and quality levels that is typically recommended for drivers with simple engine designs and regular driving styles.

This oil is also the cheapest at the auto store and is used in bulk at dealerships.
