Do you ever wonder if taking on new adventures is for you? Do people tell you, “you’re too old for that!” and you wonder if they are right?
If you google ‘activities for older adults’, you’ll find things like card games, board games, lectures. Boring!
I’ve been there. My own mom tells me how ‘crazy’ I am for doing things like zip-lining and jumping off waterfalls.
My husband and I enjoy getting outdoors and doing fun things that were often thought to be ‘only for twenty-somethings’. Umm — who put an age limit on fun, right?!
How We Stay Adventurous
Zip-lining through treetop canopies! My husband and I had so much fun doing this.
I’m a thrill seeker by nature, but this was a first for him and he was a little nervous at first. Once he got going, though, he loved it just as much as I did!
Paddleboarding on the ocean. This has to be my favorite new activity of all time. I could have stayed out paddling on the ocean all day. Our experience only lasted a couple of hours but I will definitely be doing this again!
Jumping off waterfalls in another country. Okay, this may have actually been my favorite activity (how can you pick one?). It was so much fun taking the hike up into the wilderness only to follow the river back down, jumping down waterfalls of up to 20ft along the way!
Learning new dance moves. It was so much fun to learn to salsa with the professional dancers of Dancing With The Stars. I mean, how can you pass up an opportunity like that — regardless of your age!
Kayaking with our kids. What better way to teach your kids to appreciate the outdoors than to take them on adventures with you!
Disrupting The Aging Myth – Are You Adventurous?
How many times have you stopped yourself from doing something adventurous because you felt that you were just a little too old?
Don’t let age be an excuse for getting out and about and enjoying everything around us! If you’re looking for a few different ways to stay adventurous and know that age is honestly just a number, here are some fun adventures that truly anyone can do!
Super Simple Ways to Stay Adventurous No Matter Your Age
Take a hike. There is just something so freeing about being able to take a hike through the middle of the woods or to the top of a mountain. The great part about hiking is that you can take as many, or as few a breaks that you need to ensure that you are taking care of you and your health. Hiking is an amazing way to get back in touch with the basics of nature while seeing some pretty incredible views as well!
Go kayaking or canoeing. The calm and flow of the water can be an incredible adventure for anyone. Imagine spending the day paddling away while watching the water and the fish flow around you? And when you get heated, all you literally have to do is hop off and take a quick dip. Not only is kayaking and canoeing a totally great adventure, it’s an amazing way to exercise your body as well.
Plan a camping adventure at a local park. Going camping is 100% adventurous because you never know what you’re going to encounter. All you need to enjoy some time out in nature is a tent, some snacks, and plenty of water. Once you set up camp, be prepared to let nature take over and keep your eyes and ears peeled for all the sounds going on around you!
Age is no longer a deterrent from keeping you enjoying the adventures that await. If you’re worried because you haven’t done anything like this in a while, pace yourself! Only you know how your body is feeling, so if you feel the need to slow down, do so. No one says that an adventure has to be a race. Slow down and enjoy instead!
It’s time to call B.S. on the stories and rules that attempt to define us at any age.
