Wilderness Resort – A Family Tradition

This year marks the third time that we have had the opportunity to visit the Wilderness Resort, and each time brings our family new memories. This time we told our friends in the military, who were back in Wisconsin on leave from overseas, about our plans and they decided to join us by booking a room of their own.

When we arrived for an early check-in they told us that our room was not quite ready yet, but that they would send a text message when our room was good to go.  Since I was under the impression that it could be quite a while, I was pleasantly surprised when I received a call before I even made it back to my car to grab my swimsuit.

The benefit of checking in earlier is that you can get your swim passes and spend the day enjoying the many waterparks the Wilderness has to offer. There are plenty of locker rooms to change in if your room isn’t quite ready yet, and you don’t really need the room right away if you are going to be in the water.

Highlights of visiting The Wilderness Resort

This year we first worked our way to the Lost World outdoor waterpark.  My son is a huge fan of the Halley’s Comet Racers, and he took our friends daughter on them with him.  She loved it, and they raced so many times we just may never know who the ultimate winner was!  🙂

After a bit we all worked our way down to the pool for a quick swim; then we all enjoyed the lazy river for about an hour.  I have been on many lazy rivers over the years, but this one is by far my favorite.  The resort actually calls it an adventure river because not only are there 2 levels (go up via conveyer belt, back down via slide), but there are also many different paths and entry points.  Good luck keeping your party together — but that is part of the fun!

The Wilderness Resort offers a new and improved Laser Tag Arena and Laser Maze

2020 UPDATE! While the laser tag updates listed below were pretty sweet, even more has changed since then. To see all the newest attractions and offerings at Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells, head to this blog post: Wilderness Resort Wisconsin Dells

After we all took a little break from enjoying the outdoors, had a bite to eat, and just got a little rest, the next thing we did was check out the all new OK Corral Lazer Tag Arena and the Marshall Training Lazer Maze.

I had heard that this changed, so I was a little bummed out that the old lazer tag was gone as always had a good time playing that previously. Me, my friend, and three of our kids (10, 7, and 4 years old) strapped on the laser tag gear and we headed into the arena.

Let me tell you this, once you step foot into the new arena, you will not reminisce about the old one anymore.  The new laser tag is amazing!  It is every person for themselves, and there are two levels with a big open area below.  It is almost like playing a first person shooter game!  This is included in the wild fun pass, but there is also an option to buy an unlimited pass.

Next we tried the laser maze. Ever see the move Entrapment?  Yep, I know, I am probably dating myself here, but there are scenes where the main actress has to avoid laser beams.  In the Marshall Training Lazer Maze, you get to recreate the premise of these scenes!

My son had so much fun trying to avoid the light beams that he wanted to do it again the next day. He was really good at it too!

You can also do two players with various levels of difficulty where they give you more or less beams based on the level.  I tried to do this maze but I was terrible — you get buzzed when you trip the wires and the timer counts up faster.

The greatest thing that I think is so neat about this attraction?  Since you are in a room by yourself (or with one other person in two player), is that everyone outside the game gets to see you on a TV in the outer room. So as the person inside is rolling/scooting/bending/etc., everyone outside sees your every move. The point is to go to an area that is lit up, and then after you get that one, you move to the next.

More fun for everyone

The first night we all finished by the Northern Lights Sky Ropes Course and play area.  My friend and his daughter really enjoyed the sky ropes, and unlike my son who doesn’t care for heights (that might be genetic, but he did manage to get across the first one), they managed to use the full time we were there to go over most of the 42 challenges (it is a very big area).

Meanwhile, the younger kids had a great time in the Timberland Play Park.

Staying at the Wilderness has its perks

Did you know that in order to take advantage of America’s Largest Waterpark Resort, you have to stay at America’s Largest Waterpark Resort?

I love, love, love that you have to be a guest at the Wilderness Resort in order to use the waterpark facilities and enjoy all the resort has to offer. It truly makes it a unique experience where you feel like you are an honored guest.

So what does one do on their second day at the Wilderness? More water rides of course!

Day Two is Twice as Nice

Knowing that you have another whole day to play, relax, and have some fun makes the second day just as enjoyable as the first – if not more-so.

As we a started out our second day of fun we headed over to the Wild West indoor waterpark. It was a breezy cool day so we decided to stay indoors until it warmed up — having indoor water options is a wonderful feature!

Our favorite ride as usual was the Fantastic Voyage. We can all ride as a family, but it was even more enjoyable introducing our favorite rides to our friends and seeing how much they enjoyed them as well.

Wilderness Family

After everyone had their fill, we headed up to the new Klondike Pizza Kitchen and ordered a pizza that was baked fresh on the spot. The pizza was extremely good and I highly recommend it if you will be staying at the resort and need a quick meal that everyone is sure to agree on.

After pizza the fun, we resumed our water fun in Klondike Kavern, and then headed over to the Wild WaterDome where the wave pool is one of the best I’ve ever experienced.

The Wild WaterDome is also home to the new Margarita’s Swim-Up Bar.

While I didn’t really have a chance to enjoy it as much as I would have liked since I had baby with me, I did check it out for a few minutes and the design concept is truly awesome.

We ended our stay by playing some hoops at the Glitter Gulch Mega Arcade.  All in all, it was a great time once again at the Wilderness resort and our friends who were back on leave from overseas said it was definitely worth the trip!
