I say hotdish, you say…..
Hotdish vs. Casserole. This is a great Wisconsin debate at potlucks statewide and throughout the Midwest. I think we all have a favorite dish, or five, that we love to eat and hope to see at any potluck.
I usually whip up something whenever I am pressed for time, or am trying to use up some ingredients we have lying around. I typically say hotdish, but I may be known to say casserole on occasion; I think it just depends on what I am making.
For this dish, I grabbed whatever ingredients we had in the house and whipped up a tasty hotdish. You don’t really need a recipe for any hotdish, just use what you have in the house, and ingredients that you know you will like. Add them all together and wallah! Dinner is served. 🙂
Cheesy Hamburger and Spinach Hotdish
This hotdish was simply a culmination of some of my favorite things that I also happened to have around the house. I was in need of a quick dish I could make for dinner, yet something that would be tasty and kid-approved.
I scoured my cabinets and found the following ingredients:
Spaghetti sauce, canned tomatoes, frozen corn, frozen spinach, cheese, pasta, more cheese, and hamburger. There you have it, all the ingredients you could ever need!
When making a hotdish, there really are no directions per-say, however, a good rule of thumb is to just use combinations that you know will work well together, or at least things that you like.
For my cheesy hamburger and spinach dish, I love every ingredient that I added, and I already know that adding spaghetti sauce to any type of pasta dish will liven up the flavor.
I simply browned my hamburger and cooked the pasta al dente. I cut up the cheese into cubes using one of my favorite knives from the non-stick line of cutlery by Good Cook.
Once the hamburger and pasta were done cooking, I added everything to a baking dish and added some more shredded cheese on top (mozzarella this time). I baked until the cheese was bubbly and melted and gooey. I love cheese. I am from Wisconsin, so this is probably a given, but I really love cheese. When the cheese is ready, this dish is ready. 🙂
**Note: You do not need to thaw the corn before adding, but you may want to at least break the kernels apart if they are stuck together. You could used canned corn as well, but we just had some leftover from the garden last year. The spinach you will want to thaw and drain.
Dinner is ready!
And there you have it, a perfectly easy meal ready in no time. Plus it is mostly vegetables so it must be good for you right?!
