Once you learn you are pregnant, finding time to exercise might be one of the last things on your mind; but being pregnant doesn’t mean you have to stop working out, or even that you can’t start if you haven’t worked out before. In fact, Time published an article saying that exercise in pregnancy benefits babies (not to mention you as well).

Many of you know that I recently announced that I am expecting myself. I have known for quite some time, but only just recently announced this now that I am starting to feel more comfortable.

Even though I’ve known I am expecting, that didn’t stop me from joining a Zumba class and making sure I keep myself healthy throughout my pregnancy. One of the reasons I wanted to do it is because I had just lost 20lbs on the Nutrisystem program, and really felt like I didn’t want to start back at square one by gaining too much weight during this pregnancy.

Benefits to exercising while pregnant

In fact, there are many more reasons besides to exercise while pregnant besides limiting weight gain.  The Baby Center mentions seven benefits of pregnancy exercise:

  1. Boost Energy
  2. Sleep Better
  3. Reduce pregnancy discomfort
  4. Prepare for childbirth
  5. Reduce stress and lift your spirits
  6. Improve self-image
  7. Get your body back after childbirth

For me personally, I can definitely say I feel a boost of energy and reduction in stress after my Zumba classes. I don’t necessarily need to prepare for childbirth since I know I will be having a scheduled C-section, but I have heard from many that exercising during pregnancy has helped in the childbirth process.

Exercising with the proper gear

For any exercise program you are thinking about joining (pregnant or not), you should consult your doctor first to make sure it will be a fit for you. With Zumba, it is pretty intense at times, and I know that I cannot do some of the jumping things, but I just keep moving my feet during those times and adapt it to fit my needs. You should also make sure you have proper workout gear. I know it may seem silly, but having the right gear can make a big difference for your comfort.

I have been working with Reebok on a Mom Workout Series, and the Reebok Dance Gear they provided was perfect for me to be able to comfortably attend my Zumba class. Usually I would just show up in some shorts or stretchy pants and a t-shirt, but the dance gear I received made my workout really comfortable for me.

I picked out some new shoes that are really comfortable and allow me to move my feet quickly without causing any discomfort, a pair of dance cargos, and a light weight dance graphic tee. You can view my entire ensemble here: dance gear.

I’ve been attending my Zumba class for about 6 weeks now, and even though I’ve had to miss a class due to some conflicts, it has been quite a fun experience. I often find myself struggling to want to go since the classes are in the evening, but once I’m done I feel great, and I always sleep great that night!

Finding an exercise program that works for you

Whether you decide to simply exercise at home, or join a class, finding a program or exercise that works for you is key. One place you can look is your local park and rec department. I take my Zumba class through a local park and rec program and it works out great. They offer lots of different class times, and the program is inexpensive.
