My husband and I try to stay pretty active with our kids. Whether kayaking, going for a walk to the park or taking a hike as a family, we like to get outdoors as much as possible and we like to involve the kids when we do so.

Since we have a toddler and a pre-schooler, this also means that sometimes it can be hard for them to keep up on their own. We always need to make sure to have the right gear that will allow our younger two children to keep up with the rest of us and participate.

Why The Freeloader Hiking Carriers For Toddlers

Hiking, in particular, can be a bit difficult for our younger two children. We’ve tried baby carriers for both of them, which has worked out pretty well for the most part, but our 3yr old is getting to be just a bit too big to really fit in the carrier well. Not to mention it isn’t all that comfortable for me to wear with her in it.

She can walk part of the way, but our hikes are pretty long which means she does need to be carried for a lot of the hiking as we go up and down some pretty steep hills.

So what are the best hiking carriers for toddlers? I’ve found a few that look decent, but ultimately we were able to try out the Freeloader and really love it. It is built well, it is comfortable for both the wearer and the child, and it doesn’t take up a ton of space when you aren’t using it.

Hiking carriers for toddlers need to be sturdy, yet safe. The Freeloader checks all those boxes and more. There is an easy-to-use 5-point safety harness that keeps your child secure, and wide, ergonomic shoulder and waist straps for yourself to distribute weight evenly.

The frame is solid, made of metal and wrapped in a comfortable nylon (I think) material. There are also stirrups for the feet so your child has a place to put their feet without feeling like they are just dangling.
