Isn’t it fun when you can both take part in a fun event, but also learn how to make a difference and help others at the same time?
That is exactly what I got the chance to do at last month’s Disney Social Media Mom’s Celebration. After a few days of fun and festivities, we had the chance to sit down to a breakfast courtesy of Disney Junior while we learned all about their Give a Book, Get a Book campaign.
Why Give a Book, Get a Book?
While enjoying breakfast, LaVar Burton (Cofounder of Reading Rainbow), spoke to us about what it means to be able to give the gift of reading to a child. He also told us a bit about how we can help do the same through the Give a Book, Get a Book campaign with Disney Junior.
I was thrilled to be able to take part in something like this because literacy is so important. Anyone who grew up watching Reading Rainbow knows to “take a look, it’s in a book – a reading rainbow!”
It is hard to imagine not ever having books available since it is something that is commonplace in our home, but after listening to LaVar I realized that so many children go through each and every day without ever being read to, or even having a book available to them. The Give a Book, Get a Book campaign is looking to change that!
After the informative breakfast our families got to join us as we heard a special storybook reading from non-other than some of the Disney character voices themselves. David Arquette (voice of Skully – Jake and the Neverland Pirates), Ariel Winter (voice of Marina the Mermaid – Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Sofia – Sofia the First), and Tim Gunn (Baileywick – Sofia the First) all took turns reading aloud to a roomful of excited kids and parents.
After the reading we had a chance to visit with some of the cast, and baby girl and I even got a photo op with one of my favorite characters – Genevieve from Choo Choo Soul!

Disclosure: I was invited to attend the DisneySMMom Celebration. I paid my own conference fees and received gifts during the conference. The DisneySMMom sponsors provided product and helped make the magic happen. All opinions magical or otherwise are my own.
