I’m always on the hunt for a really good food container that will work for my lunch needs.  I need something that doesn’t take up a lot of space, yet can accommodate the amount of food I want to take with me to lunch; which can be a lot at times!  Recently I was able to try out the Eco Lunch Box from Smart planet.  The first thing that intrigued me about this was of course the eco-friendly part.  They are obviously reusable, but the labeling is also made from 37% recycled content.  The next thing that intrigued me was that the lunch box was collapsible, meaning it wouldn’t take up a lot of precious storage space in my kitchen.

“This very clever lunch box is made from BPA-free, food grade silicone and biodegradable Eco Plastic. It is made to hold anything from a sandwich to last night’s leftovers and even soup.  Now it’s easy to “go green” by using this reusable waste-free lunch system. Simply compress it to 1/3 of the size so that it is easy to carry and store when you are done. As an added bonus, this set comes complete with its own innovative two sided spork that snaps into the lid.”

I was able to try the collapsible eco lunch box from smart Smart planet, in both the small and large size.  The lunch boxes are made of silicone, but since they are BPA-free and it is a food grade silicone I am okay with this.  I do try to watch what products are made of, and I don’t want something that is not going to be safe.  As you can see in the picture below, the lunch box is collapsible and goes down to 1/3 of the size.  It is actually pretty slim when you collapse it and I have no problems storing this in the limited space we have in our kitchen.

Here you can see the lunch box extended to it’s full size.  It is really deep!  Inside I have a roast my mother-in-law made.  She usually makes a meal for us about once a week, which is really nice, but sometimes there are things I just don’t like.  This is one of them.  I don’t know how to really describe what this tastes like, but I think if she would have left the sauce or off of it then it would have been fine.  My personal preference is to eat food without adding a bunch of stuff to it.  I think she added a lot of brown sugar to try to sweeten it and make it taste better, but I’m not much for sweet sauces on my meat.  On the plus side, when I used the eco lunchbox to take this to work, the container did not leak at all!  I was worried when I put it in because I wasn’t sure how well the seal would do, but it was just fine.

This is the eco lunch box in the large size.  It comes with one large compartment plus two smaller ones.  You can see that they are all very large when fully extended, and again it collapses down to take up minimal space when you are storing it.

Here is the lid that you use on the lunch box.  It has locking tabs on each side, and the inside has a seal so that liquids do not leak.  The only thing I didn’t like about this was that you could not put the lid in the dishwasher with the base.  You have to hand wash it to make sure the seal stays in tact.  It is not a big deal, but it would be a time saver if I could throw it in the dishwasher with everything else.

Overall I think this is a great set of containers to have on hand, especially if you take your lunch with you a lot like I do.
