The new independent film, Urban Hymn, follows a troubled teenage girl, Jamie, who possesses an amazing singing voice, and an inspiring and unconventional social worker, Kate, who encourages her to use it.
I had the opportunity to view Urban Hymn and found this multiple award-winning film to be a beautiful yet heartbreaking story. This fantastic movie is a story about a home for wayward children where violence is rampant and the staff makes little effort to help the residents of the facility….until Kate. Fueled by a personal tragedy in her past, Kate wants to make a real difference.

You really get drawn into the story, the emotions, and all the ups and downs of the young Jamie, who is torn between her loyalties to her possessive and volatile best friend, Leanne, and social worker Kate who has been helping her to use signing as an escape from her troubled background.
While the plot seems like something that has been done many times over, the three leads are convincing and keep the story fresh and inspiring.
